Show a Little Love!
At heart, I'm a gamer geek and virtual world "DivaKitten"--but the latest surge in people hitting the social media proclaiming (indeed having the expectation) that games should be offered for free, virtual land (server space) should be complimentary or virtual world designers shouldn't be charging for their merch during this time--it bugs me.
The men and women "behind the curtain" of these programs are putting in hours and hours of time and energy to keep these entertainments up and going during this time. In some cases, they're putting their own health at risk to go handle troubleshooting and make sure the servers are kept up.
And they're supposed to do this for free???
It's important to remember that these companies are not non-profits--their employees, taxes, rent, utilities all have to be paid during this time. If they were to give away their services or products for free for months...for all players (or in SL's case, residents)...how long do you think the companies would last???
And as far as virtual-world designers--especially now, many of these people are relying on the supplementary income that their virtual designs provide. How self-centered does someone have to be to tell them that no, despite the number of hours they've put in using design programs and scripting and testing--that it all should be just handed out because someone feels entitled?
Now that I've gotten that off my chest, I'll put my soapbox away. 😜
But seriously folks--if you've been enjoying online games or virtual world platforms during this crazy time of "social distancing," send a quick note of thanks to customer service, or if you see one of the workers online--or if a designer's work really catches your eye. It's been a stressful time and they could use a little love too. <3
